The adoption of the law on social partnerships will be (and we hope it happens soon) a step towards equality and tolerance for the LGBTIQ+ military. This corresponds to modern standards of human rights and Ukraine's obligations to the international community.
How to adopt a law to improve the lives of Ukrainian LGBTIQ+ soldiers?
The Social Partnerships Act gives legal recognition to same-sex couples, protecting their rights to inheritance, property ownership, social security, and health care. This is especially important for military members, whose partners may not have access to these rights without official recognition of their relationship.
LGBTIQ+ military personnel and their partners enjoy the same services as heterosexual couples. This includes health insurance, survivor benefits, and other social programs available to officially recognized couples.
Official recognition of a relationship can improve the psychological well-being of LGBTIQ+ military personnel by reducing the stress and anxiety associated with not knowing their partnerships. This can boost their morale and combat readiness.
In the event of the death or serious injury of an LGBTIQ+ military member, his/her partner will have legal rights to receive compensation and participate in decisions related to medical care and burial. This eliminates legal uncertainty and eases the emotional burden at difficult times.
The “Pislya Sluzhby” (After Service) Foundation provides legal and psychological support to military LGBTIQ+ and their partners and sincerely hopes for the adoption of the law on social partnership, which brings us closer to modern standards of human rights.
